Homewood
One of the often examined homes in #HistoricMontgomeryTX's downtown area is Homewood. Located on Mason St, this modified Victorian mansion is built with square nails and remains relatively unchanged since it was built in 1887, except for the attachment of the kitchen wing.
Homewood was built by William Baker Wood and his wife Amelia Jane Davis. The lot was a gift from Amelia's father, Judge Nathaniel Hart Davis (who lived in The Oaks, just east of the property). According to local information, "Billy" Wood refused to pay the carpenter who built Homewood. The claim was over what he believed to be excessive charges.
The Wood family did not begin their married lives in Montgomery. They started in Willis, and their first child, Elizabeth Davis Wood was born over the Wood Mercantile in Willis in 1885. The store burned and the family moved to Montgomery and established the W.B. Wood Store. Additional children - Valda in 1897 and WB Jr in 1900 were born at Homewood. Valda lived in the home until she passed away in 1999 at the age of 102.
